The Welkin Vintage Base Ball Club of Port Huron announces their schedule for 2010. Five match games will be played in Port Huron. All home match games are played at Port Huron’s Lincoln Park, located at the corner of North Boulevard and 28th St.
The Welkin Club plays base ball by the rules and customs of the 1860’s. The games are a historical re-creation of the 1860’s and attempt to show the customs, lifestyles and dress of that earlier era. “It’s much like watching a Civil War reenactment,” said founder Jim Fisher, “Except we are using live ammunition.” Just as the game was originally played in the 1860’s, no gloves are used. All catches are made bare-handed.
The match games are free and open to the public. They are designed to be family entertainment. Spectators are encouraged to be part of the match and cheer on the teams with era-appropriate phrases such as: “Leg it!” or “Show some ginger!” According to Fisher, “Many families bring a picnic lunch, spread a blanket and enjoy the game. After the match, we allow kids to swing a vintage bat and run the bases. It’s all about having summertime fun in Port Huron”
The current Welkin club is based on Port Huron’s first baseball team from 1867. The Welkins were re-created to be part of Port Huron's Sesquicentennial celebration in 2007. This year marks the fourth year of play for the current Welkin Club. More information can be found on their website: www.welkinbbc.com
